Step-by-step itinerary

- Visit Yasui Konpira Shrine
- See Yasaka Pagoda (Hokanji temple)
- Walk along Ninnen-zaka street

The Experience
Ninety minutes means the route stays tight: Hanami-koji, the famous street where geisha and maiko pass on their way to evening engagements, opens the walk. The wooden machiya houses and teahouses line the path, and the guide points out the details that mark old Kyoto—the architecture, the way the district has held its shape. Gion Corner sits next, the heart of the geisha district, where the preserved streets and the scale of the historic preservation become clear.
From there the walk moves to Yasui Konpira Shrine, known as one of Japan's most powerful shrines for severing bad relationships, then to Yasaka Pagoda at Hokanji temple—one of the oldest wooden structures in Japan, built without nails, and a symbol of the city. The stone-paved paths of Ninenzaka follow, lined with souvenir shops and restaurants in historic wooden buildings. The final stop is Yasaka Shrine, headquarters of 2,300 related shrines across Japan and a center of Kyoto's cultural heritage for centuries. Traditional lanterns light the streets throughout, and the guide is a local who speaks English.
Admission to all temples and shrines is included in the price. A photographer captures the group during the walk, and you receive the images. The tour is built for walking—there is plenty of time on foot to explore—and it suits all fitness levels. Public transportation options are available near the meeting point. If you arrive late, you will not be able to join.
