Train with a samurai master, then shoot targets at close range

A half-day class in Matsumoto where you learn katana sword forms and hankyu archery from a live English-speaking guide, wearing traditional samurai outfits. The experience includes entry to Matsumoto Castle, instruction in both weapons, and targets set at 5 and 7 meters for archery practice. Families and friends can compete as skill builds.

The experience

Four hours covers two distinct skills: katana first, then archery. You start by learning the sword under an expert instructor who walks you through the traditional techniques samurai actually used, explaining the feudal context as you practice. Part of that instruction happens while you're dressed in samurai kimono and gear, not as costume, but as the working clothes of the role. The theatrical swords used here (authentic katanas are restricted in Japan) let you focus on proper form and kata accessible to all ages, with no cutting involved.

After the sword work, you move to an archery room built specifically for hankyu practice. The instructor guides you through the bow's use, and once you're confident, you shoot at targets placed at 5 and 7 meters. The setup invites repetition and refinement: families and friends often turn it into friendly competition as accuracy improves. Children under six participate free with kid-sized foam swords and outfits included.

Matsumoto Castle entry is part of the package. The castle itself (built at the end of the Warring States Period) anchors the whole experience: you're learning the weapons and the mindset of the warriors who defended it. The steep, narrow stairs to the tower are worth knowing about before you book, especially if you have mobility concerns or spinal issues.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.

Can I do this experience if I'm not very fit or have never held a sword before?

Yes. The class is designed for all fitness levels and requires no prior experience. The instructor teaches proper technique from the start, and children as young as infants can participate (under six years old, they use foam swords and kid outfits at no extra cost).

What's the difference between the katana swords used here and the ones in museums?

Authentic katanas are classified as illegal weapons in Japan under strict licensing laws. This experience uses theatrical swords that let you learn proper sword technique and kata safely, without any cutting or slicing of objects involved.

How many people will be in the class with me?

This is a private half-day tour, so it's your group only with the samurai master instructor.

What happens if I can't climb the stairs to the top of Matsumoto Castle?

The stairs to the tower are steep and narrow. If climbing isn't possible for you, you can still access the lower levels of the castle and complete the full sword and archery instruction. Entry to the castle is included either way.

Do I need to bring anything, or is everything provided?

Samurai outfits, swords, and archery equipment are all included and provided during the activity. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in underneath the kimono. Meals and snacks are not included, though they're available nearby. Public transportation options are close by if you want to grab food before or after.
