Explore Matsumoto Castle and Streets
- Visit Matsumoto Castle
- Stroll along Nawate Street
- Explore Nakamachi Street
The Experience
Matsumoto Castle is the oldest castle donjon still standing in Japan, built starting in 1592 with three turrets and the black-and-white structure that earned it the nickname Crow Castle. The stairs to the top are steep and narrow, but the guide will help you navigate them. From there you can see how the city spreads out below, and that view frames everything that comes next: the streets you walk were designed around this castle, and they still work the way they did when merchants and craftspeople moved through them daily.
The route takes you down Nawate Street, a row of small shops with a frog theme running through them. You'll spot it once the guide points it out. There's Yohashira Shrine tucked in among the snack shops and souvenir stalls, a quiet place to pause. Then Nakamachi Street, where the old storehouses called Kura line the block with their black-and-white criss-cross walls. Many of these buildings still house shops selling Japanese handicrafts (pottery, lacquerware, wooden pieces), and the fully restored Sake warehouse called Kurassic-kan is open for viewing. The guide will show you how these streets still function as a living marketplace, not a museum version of one.
The tour runs 3 hours total and covers the castle and both streets at a pace that leaves room to look around. You'll need to be comfortable with walking and the steep castle stairs. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it to reach the starting point.
What’s included
- Matsumoto Castle entry.
- English-speaking guide for the full 3 hours.

What makes Matsumoto Castle different from other Japanese castles?
Matsumoto Castle is one of only five castles designated as a National Treasure of Japan and has the oldest castle donjon, the main tower, still standing in the country. Construction began in 1592, and its elegant black-and-white structure earned it the nickname Crow Castle.
Are the castle stairs difficult to climb?
The stairs to reach the top of Matsumoto Castle's tower are steep and narrow, so you'll want to be prepared for that. The guide will help you navigate them, and the view from the top frames the entire city layout you explore on the walking streets afterward.
What will I see on Nakamachi Street?
Nakamachi Street is a historic shopping area lined with old traditional storehouses called Kura, recognizable by their black-and-white criss-cross patterned walls. You'll find Japanese handicrafts including pottery, lacquerware and wooden crafts, plus the Kurassic-kan, a fully restored Sake warehouse open to the public.
Can I bring young children on this tour?
Children are welcome from age 1, though you'll want to consider the steep castle stairs and the 3-hour walking pace when deciding if it suits your group.
What's included in the tour price?
Entry to Matsumoto Castle and an English-speaking guide are included. You'll arrange your own transportation to the meeting point, and any snacks or souvenirs you buy along the way are separate.
