Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Kanazawa's historic and cultural sites

  • Stroll through Kenrokuen Garden
  • Explore the D.T. Suzuki Museum
  • Visit Nomura Samurai House and garden

The experience

The day starts at your hotel and moves through the sites that shaped Kanazawa's identity as a castle town. Kanazawa Castle, built in 1583 by Toshiie Maeda, stood as the residence of the Maeda clan until 1869. Most of the original structures burned over the centuries, but since 2001 the main buildings have been faithfully reconstructed from old documents and photographs. The castle grounds now form a public park where you walk the restored landscape. From there, the tour reaches Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan's three national gardens alongside Mito Kairakuen and Okayama Korakuen. The garden shifts with the seasons: winter snow clings to the famous Koji lanterns, a sight that has become synonymous with Kanazawa itself.

The D.T. Suzuki Museum occupies three buildings designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the architect behind MoMA's 2004 expansion in New York. The space is built around the philosophy of Suzuki Daisetsu, a Kanazawa-born Buddhist scholar who brought Zen culture to Western audiences. Rather than formal explanations, the exhibits invite you to move through narrow corridors into different spaces and form your own understanding. The centerpiece is the "garden of water glasses," a room that draws visitors into its quiet, meditative atmosphere. Nomura Samurai House preserves the domestic life of an earlier era with a small attached garden and period displays that show how the city's residents lived.

Omicho Market is where Kanazawa's food culture lives. Locals call it the kitchen of the city: seasonal fish and crabs from the Sea of Japan line the stalls alongside locally grown fruit and oden (hot pot items) you can eat while walking. The guide leads you through at your own pace, and you taste what draws you. The tour ends with hotel drop-off after seven hours on foot and by bus through the city's neighborhoods.

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 18 years); Child (4 to 12 years); Infant (under 4): free.

What happens if it rains?

What is Kenrokuen Garden and why is it famous in Kanazawa?

Kenrokuen is one of Japan's three national gardens, recognized alongside Mito Kairakuen and Okayama Korakuen for its beauty across all seasons. The garden is most iconic in winter, when snow clings to the Koji lanterns. A sight that has become a symbol of Kanazawa itself and a centerpiece of the city's tourism.

Can I eat at Omicho Market during the tour?

Yes. Omicho Market is the culinary heart of Kanazawa, and you move through at your leisure, tasting local specialties like seasonal seafood, fruit and oden as you walk. If you have dietary requirements, let the operator know at booking and vegetarian options can be arranged.

What happened to the original buildings at Kanazawa Castle?

Most of the original structures burned in repeated fires over the centuries, leaving only the Ishikawa gate and some row houses standing. Since 1996 the grounds have been a public park, and from 2001 onward the main buildings were reconstructed based on old pictures and documents to restore the landscape for visitors today.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

The tour covers uneven surfaces across multiple sites over seven hours, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. The operator recommends at least moderate physical fitness. Those with walking disabilities or poor cardiovascular health should discuss the itinerary before booking, as the terrain and pace may not be suitable.

Is transportation between sites included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and bus tickets for travel between the main attractions are part of the tour. A private car or taxi can be arranged for an additional fee if you prefer not to use the bus.

What is the D.T. Suzuki Museum and what makes it different from other museums?

The D.T. Suzuki Museum honors Suzuki Daisetsu, a Kanazawa-born Buddhist philosopher who introduced Zen culture to the Western world. The three-building complex, designed by the architect behind MoMA's expansion, has no formal explanations. Instead, you move through narrow corridors into different spaces and interpret the exhibits freely, including the "garden of water glasses," a meditative room at the center.
