The experience
The class starts at Toki no Kane, a landmark in central Kawagoe, and a 5-minute walk brings you to the venue: a public facility with wheelchair access and space to work without crowding. Your instructor, who has spent 24 years as a carving artist, begins with a clear explanation of how to hold and use the carving knife, then watches as you start on your Jizo. The piece arrives already roughed out, so you're finishing it rather than starting from blank wood. This is what makes the work manageable for beginners, even if you've never held a carving tool before.
You'll spend the bulk of the class on the actual carving: shaping the details, refining edges, working toward the form your instructor demonstrates. The work is hands-on and deliberate. There's no rush. When you've brought the piece as far as you want to take it, you'll do the finishing touches and walk out with a completed Jizo you carved yourself. You can request a specific size (small or the slightly larger version) when you book, so the piece fits what you had in mind.
Tools, carving knives and all materials stay with you for the session. You bring nothing but your hands and attention. The room is clean and well-lit, designed for this kind of close work. Public transport runs nearby if you're staying elsewhere in the city or arrived without a car.
