The experience
The tour starts at Hakodate Morning Market, where you stroll past vendors selling fresh seafood, fruit and local goods. Many small restaurants in the market serve seafood rice bowls if you want to eat there. From the market, the guide takes you by taxi or public transportation to Mt. Hakodate-yama for the viewpoint. If the ropeway is running, you can ride it to the summit (the round-trip fare is 1,800 JPY per person, paid separately). If wind closes it, the guide leads you to Goryokaku fortress instead, a walled 19th-century site with its own vantage point over the city.
The third stop is the old brick warehouse district near the waterfront, a sprawling area of restored buildings now housing souvenir shops, restaurants and a beer hall where you can order draft beer. The whole tour runs four hours and is suitable for all fitness levels. You'll move between sites by taxi or public transport, so there's no long walking. The guide handles the logistics and speaks English throughout.
