The experience

The day begins at Hakodate Morning Market, a seafood market that has operated since 1945, where you can try the sushi and seafood rice bowls the city is known for. From there, the tour moves by streetcar and bus through the main sightseeing areas, with your guide explaining the history at each stop: the end of the Edo Shogunate, the Meiji Era's growth, and the city's recovery after World War II.

Goryokaku Tower gives you the vantage point to see the full star shape of the fortress below, its five ramparts and water moat designed to protect Japan's northern frontier. The guide will walk you through the Magistrate's Office, a restored building that once served as police, court and local government, and explain why Goryokaku itself, completed as Japan's first Western-style fortress, marks a turning point in Japanese history. Mount Hakodate's ropeway takes about three to five minutes to reach the 334-meter summit, where the views open across the city and surrounding areas. The tour ends at Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse, a preserved cluster of brick and wooden structures from the same era, now lined with shops and restaurants.

All admission fees, the ropeway ride and public transportation by tram and bus are built into the tour price. A national licensed guide leads the group in English or Spanish, so you can concentrate on the sites without managing logistics or translation. The tour runs seven to eight hours, and dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free can be accommodated if you note them at booking.
