Learn an ancient Japanese strategy game from someone who has taught it for decades

This 90-minute Go class in Hakodate teaches you Japan's legendary board game from a certified 6-dan instructor with decades of teaching experience. You'll learn the basics in a traditional setting, play a friendly match, and take home a beginner's guide. The session includes Japanese tea and a seasonal wagashi sweet. The experience

You arrive with no Go experience and leave having played an actual game. The instructor (one of the highest amateur ranks in Japan) walks you through the rules in a way that makes sense even if you've never seen a board before. An English-speaking guide sits with you throughout, translating not just the moves but the philosophy behind them: why Go matters in Japanese history, how it trains the mind differently than chess, what the game reveals about strategy and patience. The 90 minutes move at your pace, with time to ask questions and watch how the pieces change the board.

You'll play a friendly match either with the instructor or with other participants in the class, which is where the game stops being abstract and becomes something you're actually doing. The board and stones are provided. You take home a printed beginner's guide so the learning doesn't stop when the session ends. Tea and a traditional Japanese sweet arrive partway through, a small ritual that anchors the experience in the culture the game comes from.

Top questions

I've never played Go before, will I actually understand what's happening?

The instructor teaches complete beginners as a core part of their work, and the English-speaking guide explains each rule and why it matters before you play. The first match is designed to be your first real game, not a test.

How long does the 90-minute session actually take, and what's included in that time?

The full 90 minutes covers learning the basics, playing a match, and the tea and wagashi break woven in. The board, stones, printed guide, tea and sweet are all part of what you get. You don't pay extra for any of it.

What makes this different from watching Go online or reading about it?

You're learning from someone who has taught and competed at the highest amateur level in Japan, and you're playing an actual game in the same session, not just absorbing rules, but using them. The cultural context the guide provides is something you won't find in a video.

Is this suitable for families with kids, or just adults?

The class is designed for all ages and all levels of curiosity. Families come regularly. The instructor adapts the pace to whoever is in the room.
