Hanko seal design and engraving with traditional brush painting experience.
Create a personalized Japanese name seal (hanko) in Roppongi by choosing your name in kanji, hiragana, or katakana, then have it professionally engraved by staff using a precision machine. The seal takes about 30 minutes to produce. During the wait, you can try calligraphy with traditional brush and ink. Green tea or Coca-Cola and a custom pouch are included. The experience suits anyone wanting a functional Japanese souvenir or gift, and children from age 3 are welcome.
The Experience
A hanko is the personal seal Japanese people use for contracts, bank transactions, and everyday paperwork. It's as essential as a signature. In this Roppongi workshop, you design your own by selecting how your name appears: in kanji characters, hiragana, or katakana. The staff will help translate your name and walk you through the design choices, including the style and layout you want. Once you've decided, the seal gets engraved by machine to your exact specifications.
While the engraving happens, roughly 30 minutes, you're not waiting idle. The workshop offers a calligraphy experience with traditional brush and ink, so you can try the same tools Japanese artists use. If the workshop is busy, production may run longer than 30 minutes. The staff will tell you the new completion time and you can return to pick it up. Your finished seal comes with a pouch and a drink (green tea or Coca-Cola).
The seal itself becomes a lasting souvenir or gift. Many travelers keep theirs for years or give them to friends and family back home. If you want to customize the kanji meaning, the carving style, or the calligraphy design beyond the standard options, let the workshop know in advance and they'll work with you on it. An English-speaking guide is available throughout.

Can children come?
11 to 20 years; 3 to 10 years. Under 3: no ticket type, they can't be added to a booking.
What does a Japanese name seal (hanko) actually get used for?
A hanko is used for legal documents, bank transactions, contracts, and official paperwork in Japan: anywhere a signature would be used in other countries. Many travelers keep theirs as a functional souvenir or give them as gifts.
Can I choose how my name appears on the seal?
Yes. You pick whether your name is written in kanji, hiragana, or katakana characters. The staff will help translate your name and guide you through design choices including the carving style and layout.
Do I carve or engrave the seal myself?
No. The workshop staff professionally engrave your seal using a precision machine once you've finalized your design. You design it. They handle the technical engraving work.
What happens during the 30 minutes while my seal is being made?
The workshop offers a calligraphy experience where you can try traditional brush painting and ink. If production runs longer than expected, the staff will tell you when to return for pickup.
