The experience

The hike starts at Arima Onsen Station on the Arima Rokko Ropeway, a five-minute walk from the trailhead at Mushi-jigoku. From there, the route follows the Totoya Road, the main mountain passage that connected Kobe and Arima for centuries. The trail winds through the healing forest, where you'll see a range of plants and spot different bird species as you move deeper into the terrain.

Two stops break up the walk. The first is a gazebo marking the site of an old tea house that once served mountain travelers. You rest here for about ten minutes. The second takes you to a viewpoint deck overlooking the town and the Tamba mountain ranges. Just before the endpoint, you pass Taiko Waterfall, where water cascades between rocky cliffs. The hike ends at Zuihouji Park, a mountain rest area known for autumn foliage in the Kansai region.

The guide carries emergency medical supplies and speaks either English or Japanese. Children from age six are welcome. You'll need proper hiking footwear (no heels or sandals), and should bring your own water and rain gear if weather looks uncertain. Public transport options are available near the starting point, so you don't need a car to reach Arima Onsen.
