The experience
Your driver picks you up from your hotel or villa in a private air-conditioned vehicle and drives into the hills of Westmoreland. The route climbs through rural Negril, moving away from the coast into the farming country where the Rastafari community grows and processes herbs. You'll meet a local brethren who lives and works on the land, and he walks you through his daily life: the crops he tends, the way he uses the plants, and the philosophy behind the work.
The core of the tour is learning what the herbs actually do. You'll see samples of different products made from what grows on the farm: teas, oils, remedies and other preparations derived from plants the brethren cultivates. A short hike takes you to the top of the mountain, where the views open across the surrounding hills and farmland. The climb is steady but not extreme. You'll need a moderate level of fitness and comfortable walking shoes.
After the hike and the farm visit, you have the option to browse the gift shop if you want to take home any of the products you've learned about. The return journey follows the same route back to your hotel. The whole experience runs between one and five hours depending on how much time you spend at the farm and how the group moves through the hike.
