Millions of dinoflagellates (single-celled organisms that emit light when agitated) live in Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth, one of only a handful of places on Earth where this bioluminescence occurs naturally. The lagoon's combination of mangroves, salt water and fresh water creates the exact conditions these microorganisms need. When you move through the water, you oxygenate the luciferin chemical in their cells, and the result is a phosphorescent blue shimmer that follows your hands, your legs, your whole body as you swim.

The tour picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and brings you to the lagoon after dark, when the glow is visible. Your guide leads a cruise around the water, then you wade into the warm, shallow lagoon for a swim. The whole experience runs 2 to 3 hours. A welcome drink and bottled water are included.
