The experience
The drive starts at your Kingston hotel and climbs steadily into the mountains, with your guide narrating the areas and landmarks as you go. Twenty minutes in, you stop at a lookout point on the eastern side of the city, then continue through Irish Town (a small village where wealthy Kingstonians escape the heat) to a second viewpoint overlooking the lush valleys and peaks of the Blue Mountains. The route then passes through New Castle, St. Andrew, where you see the old British barracks and parade ground, a seventeenth-century cannon, and the southern views of Kingston from above three thousand five hundred feet.
After another fifteen minutes of driving, you reach the UNESCO National Park grounds, where you spend up to two hours hiking the trails, watching for indigenous birds and fauna, and seeing the waterfall in the cloud forest. The early morning dew and mist are part of what makes the bird watching here distinctive. From the park you can see the western side of Kingston, completing a panoramic view of the city from different elevations. On the return journey downhill, you have the option to stop at a local roadside spot for food and drink, which takes less than an hour. The tour ends with a forty-five-minute drive back to your hotel, where the driver escorts you into the lobby.
Air-conditioned transport and a bottle of water are included throughout. Wear light hiking clothes, carry trail snacks and a small towel, and bring a light rain jacket if you prefer one. The minimum group size is two people. If you choose the Standard Tour option, you arrange your own meal. If you pick Standard Tour with Hot Meal, that stop is included and you eat there.
