The experience
Green Grotto Caves sit in Discovery Bay near Ocho Rios, named for the green algae coating the walls. The cave has layers of history: the Taino Indians sheltered there first, leaving behind cave paintings and pottery fragments. Runaway slaves used it as a refuge. During the British invasion in 1665, Spanish soldiers hid inside, and later smugglers ran arms through a tunnel that led to the sand. Toward the end of World War II, the Jamaican government stored rum barrels at the entrance. Your guide walks you through that past before moving on to the second stop.
Dunn's River Falls is a 600-foot terraced waterfall that drops straight to the beach. You start at the base and climb the cascades with a falls guide, swimming in the lagoon pools along the way and reaching the top for tropical views. If you prefer to stay dry, you can walk the site and photograph the foliage and water without entering the water. The tour includes your wristband for park entry and transportation between both sites in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your driver provides a brief history of Jamaican culture on the way.
Pickup is available within a 25-kilometer radius of Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios, including from the cruise terminals at Ocho Rios and Reynold's Pier. The tour operates on Eastern Standard Time and ends back at your meeting point. Lunch, alcoholic beverages, water shoes and gratuities are optional add-ons you can arrange at checkout.
