Step-by-step itinerary

Blue Mountains Peak Hike Experience

  • Off-road drive to trail entrance
  • Hike to the Peak (3-4 hours)
  • Drive back from the Peak
  • Cook local food
  • Hang out with locals

The Experience

The hike starts with a Jeep drive off-road to the entrance of the peak trail. From there, the climb to the summit takes 3 to 4 hours each way, and you choose whether to go at sunrise or sunset: the guide adjusts the schedule around whichever you pick. Roger Thompson, a former park ranger and forest ranger who grew up in the mountains, leads the hike and knows the plants, animals and insects along the way.

On the return drive, the route stops at a river for a swim. If a roadside gathering is happening, the guide will pull over so you can join in briefly. Back at the base, you roast and cook some local food together, then hang out and chill with the locals. This is not a rushed tour that drops you off at the end. The whole experience runs 10 to 12 hours from start to finish.

Pickup is included from Kingston or Buff Bay. The hike is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness and should bring proper gear: hiking stick, sweaters, rain jacket. Accommodation can be arranged on request if you want to stay in the community.

Is this one for you? This tour works best if you don't have a car or are staying away from the mountains: the Jeep pickup and drive to the trailhead means you start the hike rested instead of tired from finding your way up. The choice between sunrise and sunset lets you plan the rest of your day around whichever light you want on the peak.
