The experience
The drive south from Montego Bay covers two hours through the heart of Jamaica, passing through three parishes and the scenic 2.5-mile bamboo archway that lines both sides of the road: a stop built in for photos. The route shows you the rural landscape and the way of life in these communities before you arrive at the Appleton Estate, built in 1749 and the oldest rum distillery on the island. You tour the factory floor, see how donkeys once ground the cane and how modern machinery does it now, then taste the rums Appleton is known for: the White, VX and Gold.
From the distillery, a 10-minute boat ride takes you out to Floyd's Pelican Bar, a restaurant and bar that floats in the Caribbean with no land access. The only way there is by water. You order real Jamaican lunch and a cold Red Stripe beer or soda, included with the tour. The boat ride back to Montego Bay closes the day.
