The experience

The Valsanzibio Garden sits in Galzignano Terme, a town the Venetian nobility favored from the 14th century onward as the setting for their country estates. The garden itself dates to the 17th century and unfolds as an allegorical landscape: you move through stages marked by named monuments (the Portal of Diana, the Statue of Winged Time, the Dolphin Fountain) each one part of a symbolic path of salvation. Water features, fountains, a labyrinth and statues are woven through tree-lined avenues across the grounds, all set against the gentle slopes of the Euganean Hills.

From there the minivan carries you to Villa dei Vescovi in Luvigliano di Torreglia, a 16th-century building that served as a holiday retreat for Padua's high prelates. The villa has been expanded and decorated over centuries, but its defining feature is how it sits in the landscape: the great arches of the loggias and the hanging courtyard frame views of the Euganean Hills. Inside, the noble rooms and lounges lead to a large luminous hall decorated with Lambert Sustris' cycle of frescoes: bucolic scenes that fill the walls and ceilings.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian and travels with the group by minivan. The tour departs from Padua or from Abano/Montegrotto Terme, depending on where you are staying, and both site admissions are included.
