Villa Pisani dominates: it is the largest residence on the waterway, built on a grander scale than its neighbors when Alvise Pisani became doge in 1735. The villa's scale and the frescoes inside, painted by artists including Tiepolo, are what made it the choice for state visits: Tsar Alexander I, Gustav of Sweden, and in 1934, Hitler and Mussolini all stayed there. You walk through the rooms at your own pace after the guide's introduction. The minivan then moves along the Brenta to Villa Widmann and its grounds.

The Riviera del Brenta itself is the route. This waterway between Padua and Venice became the summer retreat for Venetian nobility once the city's wealth peaked, and the villas line both banks in a sequence that tells the story of who held power and when.
