The experience
The tour starts at Via Cavour, steps from the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and moves through Rome's ancient heart on a Vespa. You'll pass the Palatine Hill, where Rome itself was founded and where imperial palaces still stand in ruins, then ride toward the Colosseum: the amphitheater that once held 80,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests. The route takes you to Janiculum Hill, which offers panoramic views across the city and the baroque Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, and to Circus Maximus, the ancient chariot racing stadium that could seat over 150,000 people. You'll also see Vatican City and the Keyhole at Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, where St. Peter's Basilica frames itself through a decorative opening in the gate.
You choose how to ride: as a passenger with a driver, or self-driven on your own Vespa if you're 18 or older and hold a motorcycle license (category A) or car license (category B). Self-driven riders need solid scooter or motorcycle experience: casual riding doesn't count. The tour runs in all weather, so dress for the conditions. An audio guide plays in English, Spanish, Italian or French as you move through the sites. Bottled water is provided, and you'll receive souvenir photos from the day.
The 3-hour itinerary covers ground quickly on two wheels, hitting landmarks that would take much longer to reach on foot or by public transit. If you're self-driving, you'll handle the scooter yourself through Rome's streets. If you choose a driver, you sit as a passenger and focus on the sights. Either way, you move at a pace that lets you see the ruins, the views and the scale of these ancient places without the stop-and-wait rhythm of a walking tour.
