The Experience

The first thing I remember is the light — that soft, watery gold you only get in Venice, kind of bouncing off the Grand Canal as we met Daniel near the Rialto Bridge. I tried to look mysterious for the photo but ended up laughing instead. He showed us how to stand so the Basilica’s domes peeked over our shoulders — honestly, I still think about that shot.

My favorite part was when we ducked away from the crowds toward Campo Santa Maria Formosa. Suddenly it got quiet; just footsteps echoing on old stones and a faint smell of damp stone after last night’s rain. Daniel told us this was his favorite corner of Venice — not many tourists find it. We took some photos by a faded green door and he told me my Italian pronunciation was “not bad… for an English speaker.” I’m still not sure if that was a compliment. By the end, we’d forgotten about posing and just wandered along the canal while he snapped away.
