Train your paddling in Venice's working canals, then step inside a historic rowing club.

A kayaking skills class in Venice's Cannaregio and Castello canals for intermediate paddlers, led by local instructors Nicoló and Aleksandra. The session includes paddling instruction, training on the water, a visit to a historically important Venetian rowing club, and all equipment; the guide photographs the class and sends images afterward. Suitable for adults with moderate fitness and prior water sports experience; children from age 13 are welcome.

The Experience

Cannaregio and Castello hold the working waterways where Venetians actually paddle, not the tourist routes through San Marco. This class puts you in a kayak on those canals—the ones that narrow under low bridges and carry the city's own boat traffic. You'll spend roughly 80 minutes on the water, paddling under instruction from guides who live here and know the rhythm of the channels. The class is built for intermediate kayakers: you need prior paddling experience and moderate fitness to handle the physical demands, and the guides will confirm your level before you start. If you arrive and your skills don't match the group, they'll move you to another session at the same level.

The rowing club visit anchors the cultural side. This is not a museum stop—it's an active club where Venetians train, and stepping inside shows you how water sports are woven into the city's identity and daily life. The instructors, a young couple who chose to stay in Venice, frame the whole thing around that connection: sport as history, history through sport. You'll get paddling instruction before you launch, then work on technique while moving through the canals. Waves of about a foot are common, along with other boat traffic, so you're training in real conditions, not a sheltered lagoon.

Equipment is provided—kayaks, paddles, life jackets—and the guide handles photography during the session, sending images to you afterward. Leave your phone in a locker; the guide's camera is the one that works while paddling. If you bring a GoPro or camera mounted to your hat or life jacket, you can film hands-free. The class can be rescheduled if weather turns unsafe or if internal club events shift the schedule, and you'll be contacted to arrange a new time.

Is this one for you?Book this class if you have intermediate paddling skills and want to train on Venice's working canals instead of a sheltered lagoon—the real waterways, the real traffic, and the real club where locals paddle. The guide's presence and the rowing club visit ground the session in how Venetians actually use the water, not how tourists see it.

Top questions

What level of kayaking experience do I need for this class in Venice?

What happens during the rowing club visit?

You'll visit a historically important Venetian rowing club where local athletes train. It's an active facility, not a tourist attraction, and the visit shows you how water sports are part of Venice's traditions and contemporary life.

How long is the kayaking class, and what's included?

The session runs about 80 minutes on the water. Included are the kayak, paddle, life jacket, paddling instruction from your guide, and a photo service—the guide photographs the class and sends images to you after.

What physical fitness do I need, and are there weight or size limits?

You should be in moderate physical condition and able to enter a kayak cabin that is 80 centimeters long and 40 centimeters wide. Weight limits are under 120 kilos for men and under 100 kilos for women; the guide will confirm your suitability when you book.

Can children join this kayaking class?

Children from age 13 are welcome. Younger children between 8 and 12 can participate only in a double kayak with a parent or instructor, not paddling alone.

What happens if the weather is bad or I can't make the class?

The class can be cancelled if conditions turn unsafe—strong winds, heavy rain, fog, or lightning. If that happens, the guide will contact you to reschedule. You can also request a reschedule if the club's schedule changes due to internal events or maintenance.
