The experience
Your guide meets you at the Venice Tours office at Campo San Gallo, a five-minute walk from San Marco Square, wearing a dark blue Vox City uniform so you can spot them easily. From there the walk moves through the quieter corners of the district: past Campo Manin, named after the 19th-century leader Daniele Manin, and into narrow streets lined with apartments and small hotels. The Scala Contarini del Bovolo, a 15th-century spiral staircase that appears in Orson Welles' 1952 film Othello, sits tucked away where most foot traffic never reaches.
The route takes in Teatro La Fenice, one of Italy's most important opera houses, where Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi premiered their works. You'll also see San Moisè Church, built in the 7th century with a Baroque façade covered in intricate statues, and pass through Calle dei Nomboli, the Street of the Blind, a narrow alley near the Rialto Bridge. Each stop has a story the guide shares. The squares themselves carry the history of Venice's Risorgimento and the Napoleonic era.
After two hours, the guided portion ends and you continue at your own pace using the Vox City sightseeing app, which includes audio commentary in six languages and two additional self-guided walking routes. Download the app before you arrive by scanning the QR code on your voucher. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Arrive five minutes early so the tour departs on time.
Is this one for you?Choose the language that matches your comfort level (five options are available at checkout), so you understand the stories behind each square and alley. The two-hour timeframe fits a first morning in Venice or a free afternoon, leaving room to explore further with the app afterward.
