The Experience

The experience starts on land at the Gondola Gallery, where you'll see how a gondola is actually built—the tools, the wood, the cross-section of the hull—and watch a VR film that brings Venice of the 1400s back to life. Then you board a traditional gondola with no more than four other people, and the gondolier takes you onto the Grand Canal, known as "the most beautiful road in the world." What you see from the water is almost exactly what a nobleman in the 18th century saw, and before him a Renaissance merchant and before him someone in the Middle Ages.

The route passes La Fenice Opera House, where Verdi premiered some of his greatest works, and Peggy Guggenheim's palace on the water—the terrace where she sunbathed looking out onto the canal. You'll see the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, the imposing circular church at the entrance to the Grand Canal, built in memory of the plague's end. The ride ends at St. Mark's Basin, where the bell tower rises above the square. The whole gondola journey takes 30 minutes, though it may run slightly shorter depending on tides and canal conditions.

Each gondola holds a maximum of five people, and the gondolier assigns seats based on weight distribution rather than preference. The ride doesn't operate in exceptionally bad weather or extreme tides, but can be rescheduled or refunded. If you want to extend the evening, you can add dinner at a traditional Venetian restaurant serving local specialties.

Top questions

What exactly happens at the Gondola Gallery before the ride?

The Gondola Gallery is a 20-minute introduction where you see authentic gondola parts, tools, and a cross-section of the boat's hull to understand how these vessels are constructed, then experience a VR film that recreates Venice as it was in the medieval period.

Can I choose where to sit in the gondola?

No, the gondolier assigns seats based on weight distribution to keep the boat balanced, so you won't be able to pick your spot.

What landmarks will I see from the gondola?

The route passes La Fenice Opera House, Peggy Guggenheim's palace, the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Mozart's House, Punta della Dogana, the Accademia Bridge, and St. Mark's Bell Tower at the basin.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my ride?

The gondola ride doesn't operate during exceptionally bad weather or extreme high or low tides; in those cases the operator will reschedule you for another day or refund your booking.

Is dinner included, or is it an add-on?

Dinner at a traditional Venetian restaurant is optional and available as an upgrade to your gondola ride; the basic booking includes only the Gondola Gallery introduction and the 30-minute ride itself.

What language will the guide speak?

The live guide conducts the experience in English, Spanish, or French depending on your group's preference.
