The experience

Three hours is enough to move through the Vatican's collections without the crowds that clog the public queues. You meet your guide at the museum entrance, skip the line with your ticket already in hand, and start in the Belvedere and Pigna Courtyard before moving into the Picture Gallery. That gallery holds works by Giotto, Perugino, Leonardo and Caravaggio: pieces that anchor the whole sweep of Italian art. Your guide focuses on the Greek and Roman originals and the Pope's apartments painted by Raphael and other masters, then moves through the Tapestries, Candelabra and Maps galleries, each one a room most visitors rush through or miss entirely.

The Sistine Chapel is the second half. You stand in the center of the chapel looking up at Michelangelo's vault and the Last Judgment on the far wall. The frescoes that made the chapel the most-visited attraction in the Vatican. Perugino, Botticelli and Ghirlandaio painted scenes around the walls, but it is Michelangelo's work that holds the eye. Because this is a private tour, your guide can linger on the details and answer questions without the pressure of a group moving past you.
