The experience
You meet your guide at Rome Termini and skip the ticket lines that form outside the Vatican Museums entrance. The museums hold 20,000 works collected by the Catholic Church and papacy over centuries, and a guide steers you through the highlights instead of leaving you to wander. You walk the Gallery of the Maps, commissioned in 1580 and lined with hand-painted topographical maps of Italy; the Pio-Clementino Museum, which opened in 1771 and houses Greek and Roman sculpture; and the Candelabra Gallery and Tapestry Gallery. The route is built around the museums' layout, so you move through connected rooms rather than backtracking.
The Sistine Chapel sits at the end of the museums. Built between 1473 and 1481, it is where papal conclaves take place, but most visitors come for Michelangelo's ceiling and The Last Judgment, both painted directly onto the chapel walls and vault. Your guide explains what you're looking at. You stand and take in the scale of it. After the chapel, if the passage is open and the basilica is accessible that day, your guide leads the group into St. Peter's Basilica, where you explore at your own pace without a line at the door.
Headsets are provided so you hear your guide clearly even in crowded galleries. Knees and shoulders must be covered. The dress code is enforced at entry. The tour involves numerous stairs and uneven floors, so comfortable walking shoes matter. If you book the evening group tour, St. Peter's Basilica is not included in that option.

Is this one for you?Choose the small group or private tour if you want a guide who can answer questions as you move through the galleries. The evening group tour departs later but excludes St. Peter's Basilica. The skip-the-line entry saves you the wait outside, but the tour itself keeps a fixed pace through the museums, so it suits travelers who prefer a structured route over self-guided wandering.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 17 years); Infant (under 7): free.
What's actually inside the Gallery of the Maps that makes it worth seeing?
The Gallery of the Maps holds a series of painted topographical maps of Italy, commissioned in 1580 by Pope Gregory XIII and based on drawings by friar and geographer Ignazio Danti. It's a room-length display of Renaissance cartography, and your guide explains what each map shows.
Do I have to follow the guide the whole time, or can I wander on my own?
You stay with the guide through the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel for the full tour. Once you reach St. Peter's Basilica at the end, you're free to explore it at your own pace without the group.
What happens if the passage to St. Peter's Basilica is closed when I visit?
If the passage between the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica is not open on your tour date, your guide will not be able to lead the group into the basilica. The Vatican Museums reserve the right to close sections due to unforeseen circumstances, and access to the basilica is subject to availability.
How long does the whole tour take from start to finish?
The tour runs two to three hours from your meeting point at Rome Termini through the museums, Sistine Chapel, and into St. Peter's Basilica if it's accessible. Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in.
Can I book a private tour instead of going in a group?
Yes, you can choose between an English small group tour, an English private tour, an English evening group tour, or an English group guided tour. Each option is available at checkout, and the private tour is a separate booking.
What do I need to bring or wear to get in?
Bring a valid identity document. It's required for entry. Wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders, as the dress code is enforced. Comfortable walking shoes are essential because the route includes numerous stairs and uneven terrain.
