Ever wondered if you’d really notice the difference with a guide who speaks your own language? I did, honestly. But right from the start of this Vatican Museums tour in Rome, hearing our Dutch-speaking guide joke about Roman traffic and point out little details on the marble floor — things I’d have walked straight past — it just felt easy. No awkward straining to catch every word. We skipped a line that looked like it belonged at Schiphol during summer holidays, which was a relief (and yes, that’s included).

The Animal Room smelled faintly of old stone and polish, and our guide — Marieke — had this way of making even ancient statues feel like gossip from last week. She paused by the Laocoön group and asked us what we saw in their faces; I said “panic” and she grinned. There was something so casual about her explanations, weaving in bits of Dutch history when we passed those huge Flemish tapestries. At one point she lowered her voice to tell us about Nero’s Bath — apparently he never actually bathed there, which made us all laugh.

I didn’t expect to feel much in the Sistine Chapel (too many photos online already), but standing there in silence hit differently. The hush is real — not just rules, but people actually being quiet together, looking up at Michelangelo’s ceiling. My neck hurt after a while but I couldn’t look away; Marieke had told us a story about Michelangelo painting alone at night that stuck with me. Afterwards some folks peeled off to visit St Peter’s Basilica on their own (it’s not part of this tour right now because of restrictions), but I found myself just sitting outside for a minute, thinking about how much art can say without words.
