Tropea sunset cruise: Swim hidden coves, Aeolian Islands views
The Bay of Caves has a white sand seabed where you swim among fish before the aperitif arrives on deck.
A 2.5-hour sunset cruise aboard the Blue Ocean sails between Tropea and Capo Vaticano along the Costa degli Dei, stopping to swim in sea-accessible coves and hidden bays. The boat carries a refreshment bar and panoramic deck with sun loungers. A live guide narrates in English or Italian, and on clear evenings the Aeolian Islands and Strait of Messina appear on the horizon. Bruschetta, chips, appetizers and white wine (or non-alcoholic ginger) are served after the final swim.

Step-by-step itinerary
Sunset cruise along Costa degli Dei
- Meet Riaci rock and hear WWI story
- Pass rocks of the Formiche and Roman port
- Circumnavigate Praia di Focu beaches and Cave of Love
- Swim in Bay of caves and enjoy aperitif
- Photograph Tropea from sea and swim near Grotta del Palombo
The experience
The cruise departs to meet the Riaci rock, where a World War I story unfolds around caves carved by torpedo fire from a warship. You'll pass the Formiche rocks and the site of Forum Erculis, once the Roman Empire's most important port, then circumnavigate the three beaches of Praia di Focu. The route takes in the rock of Mantineo and the Cave of Love before reaching the Bay of Caves, where the seabed turns white sand and the water fills with small fish. This is where you swim and the aperitif is served on deck.
After the swim, the boat stops again in front of the Grotta del Palombo and the beaches of the Rotonda, positioning you for the most photographed view of Tropea from the sea. As the sun sets, the light shifts across the water and the coastline. If clouds stay clear, the Aeolian Islands and the Strait of Messina come into view across the distance. The Blue Ocean carries a panoramic deck with comfortable sun loungers and a refreshment bar throughout the journey.
