The experience
Barumini sits inland from Cagliari, reached by driving through wheat fields and olive groves across the Campidano plain toward the Marmilla region, where rounded hills rise above the landscape. On the way, the route passes through Villamar, a small village decorated with murals and sculptures typical of South Sardinia. The guide explains what you're seeing as the terrain changes: how the land shaped the people who built here.
Su Nuraxi itself is the main stop: a massive Bronze Age structure built in the XV century B.C., made up of towers, walls and a village arranged around a central courtyard. The visit splits into two parts. First, you explore the huts and the surrounding towers on the ground level, walking the narrow paths between the ancient stone houses. Then you climb the main structure itself, moving through tight corridors to reach the internal courtyard and the highest towers, where the scale and precision of the construction become clear. The guide walks you through how the nuraghi people lived and built.
The return to Cagliari includes two stops that frame the day differently. Molentargius Regional Park is a saltpond system famous for its pink flamingoes and other bird species. You stop for photos and the guide explains how the flamingoes got their color and why they nest here. Poetto Beach, one of Europe's longest sandy stretches, offers a view of the rock formation called the Devil's Saddle and a chance to stop at one of the kiosks along the water the way locals do. The final stop is a panoramic hill overlooking Cagliari's two medieval districts, Villanova and Castello, the Gulf of Cagliari, and a statue of Saint Francis.
