The Experience

I’ll never forget how the fields changed as we left Cagliari behind—first city noise, then suddenly those endless stripes of wheat and artichokes out the minivan window. Our guide, Paolo, kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: a shepherd waving (he actually waved back), the way the hills looked almost gold in the morning light. Forty-five minutes felt like nothing. I was half-awake and then—boom—Barumini. The air smelled kind of dry and sweet, like hay after rain.

I’d seen photos of Su Nuraxi but standing there was different. The stones felt cold when I touched them (Paolo said they’re almost 4,000 years old—wild). He told us about the Nuragic people and how this fortress is basically Sardinia’s answer to Stonehenge, but with more mystery. There was a moment inside one of those narrow passages where it went quiet except for some birds above us. Honestly gave me chills. On the way back Paolo stopped in a little village with murals everywhere—some faded, some bright—and grabbed us coffee at a bar where everyone seemed to know him. Sardinia feels small that way.
