A small-group guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City with skip-the-line entry, dome access and the Vatican Grottoes, led by an English-speaking Vatican expert for up to 10 participants. The early entrance and group cap mean you move through the basilica and its underground papal tombs ahead of the main crowds. The dome's terrace may close in bad weather. The operator offers a partial refund for the basilica-and-grottoes option or a full refund to reschedule.

The experience
The tour starts in Borgo, Rome's historical district adjoining Vatican City, where your guide introduces the Vatican and its secret passages before moving into St. Peter's Square. Bernini designed the piazza in the 17th century as a keyhole-shaped expanse meant to frame the basilica as "the gateway to Heaven": the trapezoidal section nearest the church and the vast oval beyond together create that ground plan. Skip-the-line entry gets you past the regular queue, though security screening still takes time. Your guide will help you navigate both the basilica's art and architecture and the centuries of papal history embedded in its stones.
The dome climb takes you to the terrace at the top of St. Peter's, where the view spans all of Vatican City and stretches across Rome to the Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo and the hills beyond. Your guide points out the landmarks as they appear. Below the basilica, the Vatican Grottoes (also called the Vatican Crypts or Vatacombs) hold the tombs of popes, martyrs and other figures central to Catholic history, along with columns from the original 4th-century basilica built by Emperor Constantine. The whole route moves top to bottom, so you see the basilica's interior, climb to the dome, then descend into the underground cemetery.
Groups stay capped at 10 people, which means the experience stays intimate and your guide remains accessible throughout. The tour runs 3 hours. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes that cover your knees and shoulders. The basilica enforces a dress code and may refuse entry otherwise. Metal detectors screen all visitors at the square entrance. If bad weather closes the dome terrace, you can either take a partial refund and continue with the basilica and grottoes, or cancel for a full refund and rebook another day.

Is this one for you?Groups stay under 10 people, so the tour moves at a pace that lets your guide answer questions and you stay close to the group rather than getting lost in the crowds that fill the basilica during peak hours. Choose this if you want the dome, the crypts and the papal history explained by someone who knows the site, without navigating the lines and the masses on your own.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What is the view like from the top of St. Peter's Dome?
The dome's terrace offers a 360-degree panorama of Rome and Vatican City, with your guide helping you identify landmarks like the Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo and the city stretching to the hills beyond. The view is considered the best vantage point over the Eternal City.
Can I see the papal tombs on this tour?
Yes. The Vatican Grottoes below the basilica house the tombs of various popes and other figures important to Catholic history, and the tour includes access to this underground cemetery. You'll also see columns from the original basilica built in the 4th century.
How does skip-the-line entry work?
The tour operator purchases priority tickets for all guests, so you bypass the regular queue. However, you still pass through security screening at the entrance, which can take around 20 minutes. The regular line typically takes hours.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If bad weather closes the dome terrace, you can either visit the basilica and grottoes for a partial refund, or cancel the entire tour for a full refund and rebook on another day.
What dress code applies inside the basilica?
You must cover your knees and shoulders. The basilica enforces this requirement and may refuse entry if you don't comply. It's an active parish, so it's also subject to last-minute closures for mass or other religious events. In that case the tour is canceled and fully refunded.
