The Experience
Most people spend weeks in a pool before they ever see the actual ocean floor. You'll skip that part. A PADI instructor meets you at the dive shop in Sorrento, runs through the basics on land—how to breathe, how to equalize, what the hand signals mean—and then you're in the rubber dinghy heading out toward Punta Campanella, the protected marine reserve off the Sorrento coast. The water is already a different color out here, deeper blue, and you can feel the shift from tourist town to something else entirely.
Your first dive takes you down to 6 meters, which sounds shallow until you're actually there and the seafloor is opening up in front of you. The instructor stays right beside you the whole time, watching your breathing, your buoyancy, your hands. You're learning by doing—adjusting your depth, moving through the water, getting used to the sound of your own breath amplified inside the regulator. Schools of bream and groupers move past. There are white gorgonians on the rocks, starfish, and if you're lucky, an octopus tucked into a crevice. The visibility is usually good here; you can see maybe 20 meters ahead. The second dive goes deeper, down to 12 meters, and by then your body has already started to understand what's happening. You're not fighting the water anymore.
The whole thing takes a few hours from start to finish. You get bottled water and snacks between dives, and all the equipment—wetsuit, tank, weights, the works—is included. The dinghy is small, so groups stay manageable. You're not on a big boat with forty other people; it's you, your instructor, maybe a handful of others, and the Sorrento coast rising up behind you as you motor back in.
What’s included
- All scuba equipment (wetsuit, tank, regulator, weights, mask, fins), bottled water between dives, and snacks.
- The PADI instructor is with you for the entire experience, including both dives.
- Transportation to the dive site by rubber dinghy is included; public transport options are available to reach the meeting point in Sorrento.
Operated by Punta Campanella Diving Center
Is this one for you?Right for anyone who wants to try scuba without committing to a certification course first—the instructor handles all the teaching and safety, so you just focus on the experience itself.
