The experience
The boat leaves Marina Corta in Lipari and heads south along the coast, stopping first at Spiaggia della Forbice, where emerald water reflects the green vegetation on shore. You snorkel here, then continue past the Secca rock and Punta Caprazza to Praia Vinci, the second swim stop in the channel facing Vulcano's Grand Crater. The landscapes are stark and dramatic. Along the way you'll see the Faraglioni of Lipari, the Rock of the Mummy, and the Arch of Angels. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and fresh fruit comes aboard.
Once at Vulcano, you climb the crater on your own. The route is straightforward, gaining 400 meters in altitude, and no guide is required. The path is simple enough that you set your own pace. The crater itself looks lunar and otherworldly, worth the hike. Wear sturdy shoes. The terrain demands them. Federica stays with the boat and waits for your return, then motors back to Lipari.
The boat is spacious and comfortable, with a large awning, stereo, USB sockets, a hand shower, and an icebox. Federica, a native Italian speaker, also speaks English and French. She does not run this tour in August because of the heat. The whole day (snorkeling, climbing, the boat ride) takes five hours.
