The experience
The boat leaves Vieste port and heads south along a coastline of high white cliffs studded with brooms, rockroses and pines that lean out over the water. On the crossing you pass the islet of San Eufemia, the peninsula of San Francesco, and the monolith of Pizzomunno: a sea stack named after a fisherman and a mermaid in local legend. The Arco di San Felice frames the entrance to a small cave. Beyond it lie the Scialara beach, Portonuovo with its fine sand and shallow seabed, and a string of named coves: San Felice, Campi, Porto Greco, Pugnochiuso, Cala della Pergola, Vignanotica.
Baia delle Zagare is the destination: a bay of gravel beaches backed by the same white cliffs, with natural rock arches rising from the sea and stacks that are the bay's signature. Depending on sea and weather conditions, the boat stops for a bathing break in one of the bay's most sheltered coves, giving you time to swim in water clear enough to see the bottom. The skipper speaks English and Italian and knows the coast well enough to adjust the route if conditions change.
Four hours covers the full crossing and the swim. You're back at Vieste port by early afternoon. Transport and fuel are included, and the shared format keeps the boat small enough that sightlines stay open.
