The PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program in Taormina's Isola Bella Marine Park lets you try diving under direct guidance of a certified instructor, starting in shallow water at 6 meters and moving to 12 meters on a second dive. The experience includes a detailed briefing on equipment and technique, boat transport from the UNAHOTEL Naxos Beach resort, and runs about six hours from gathering at 8am to return by 2:30pm. Children are welcome from age 10, and no certification is required.

The experience

The day starts at the dive resort with tea and coffee while the crew prepares your scuba equipment. You'll travel by boat to Isola Bella Marine Park in Taormina, passing the Blue Cave along the way. The transfer from the resort to the harbour in Giardini-Naxos is included. Once at the marine park, you get an elaborated briefing on breathing technique, equipment use, equalization and basic skills before entering the water.

Your first dive stays at a maximum of 6 meters, where you learn to use the scuba equipment under the instructor's direct guidance. After about an hour and a half, you surface for a break next to Isola Bella with views of the island. The crew offers fresh fruit, iced tea and water. The second dive goes to 12 meters and is designed as an easy, fun experience now that you've practiced the basics. Between dives and after surfacing, you're in control of your own pace and comfort: the instructor watches and guides, but you're the one breathing underwater and moving through the marine environment.

Back on board after the second dive, the crew serves Sicilian wine and almond biscuits with relaxing music as you return to the resort. The whole group stays small enough that the guide can give each diver attention, and the experience is conducted in English, Italian or French depending on the group. If you find you want to continue diving after this introduction, the operator can discuss further training options.
