The Ionian and Adriatic coasts meet at one point, and you see it from the water.

A 4-hour boat tour departing from Torre Vado visits caves carved into the cliffs on both the Ionian and Adriatic sides of Salento, ending at Capo Santa Maria di Leuca where the two seas meet. The crew points out the geology and history of each cave as you pass. Two 25-minute swimming stops let you cool off in the water, and an aperitif with a cocktail is served on board. A live guide speaks English, Italian or Russian.

The experience

The boat leaves from the tourist port at Torre Vado and heads toward the caves that line the coast. You'll move between the Ionian side and the Adriatic natural park, stopping inside the Three Doors Cave, Grotta del Soffio, Porcinara cave and others, each one with its own shape and history. The crew explains what makes each one distinctive (the rock formations, the local names, the stories tied to them) as you drift past or pull inside. The Mannute cliff marks the boundary between the two seas, and then you reach Capo Santa Maria di Leuca itself, where the Tacco d'Italia (the "heel of Italy") juts into the water and the two coasts meet.

Two stops break up the boat time. Each one lasts about 25 minutes and is built for swimming. You can jump in or stay on deck. Bar service runs throughout the tour, and an aperitif based on typical local products comes with your ticket, along with an alcoholic or non-alcoholic cocktail. The boat has bathrooms on board. Bring only water if you want to carry anything. Outside food and drink are not permitted.
