The experience
Forty-five minutes is enough to step away from San Gimignano's towers and into the rhythm of the farm. Podere la Marronaia sits within walking distance of the town center but surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with the Vernaccia vineyard visible from the tasting room. The farm converted all cultivation to organic methods in 2000 and became certified organic in 2003, using only natural products and working with the soil's own fertility rather than against it.
A family member leads the tasting in English or Italian, walking you through four wines (Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, Rosato IGT Toscano, and Sangiovese IGT Rosso Toscano), and three extra virgin oils: natural, chili-pepper flavored, and truffle. Bread and small snacks arrive with the tasting, and bottled water is included. The tasting room, Sosta Alle Colonne, is set up to let you linger and ask questions without rushing through the lineup.
