The experience

The drive south from Rome takes you through the Castelli Romani region (a collection of hilltop villages around two lakes where Romans have escaped the city heat since ancient times), then past Montecassino Abbey, the 1,500-year-old monastery rebuilt after World War II. As the landscape opens toward the coast, Mount Vesuvius comes into view, dominating the Bay of Naples. About 3 million people live in the shadow of that volcano today, making it the most densely populated volcanic region on earth.

At Pompeii, the 79 AD eruption that buried the city under ash and lava also preserved it almost perfectly. You can walk through homes with intact mosaics, bakeries with loaves still in the ovens, theaters and forums laid out exactly as they stood two millennia ago. The site is large and uneven underfoot. Most visitors spend a few hours here, either on their own or with a professional guide if you book that option. Your driver can comment on the attractions from inside the vehicle during the drive, but Italian law restricts what unlicensed guides can explain once you step outside.

After Pompeii, the route follows the Amalfi Coast (a dramatic stretch of cliffs and sea), to Positano, a village of pastel-colored houses stacked into the green cliffs above a curved beach. You have free time here to explore designer shops, art galleries, seaside cafes and the beach itself before rejoining your driver for the return to Rome. Traffic in high season can reduce time at either stop, and the sequence may shift to avoid congestion, but the main sights stay the same. If Positano doesn't appeal, you can request Sorrento instead before the tour begins.
