The Experience

Hands wrapped around a coffee-to-go, I slid into the back seat just as our driver waved a casual “buongiorno” from the front. The city was still waking up—Rome’s streets half-empty, sunlight barely making it through the buildings. I didn’t expect to leave so early, but honestly, that first hour rolling past Castelli Romani felt like a slow exhale. Vineyards and sleepy villages flashed by. Our driver (Marco—he had that easy Roman humor) pointed out Castel Gandolfo and joked about the Pope’s summer “holiday house.” I tried to snap a photo but mostly caught my own reflection in the window.

The landscape started shifting after Montecassino Abbey—a quick stop for photos and a story about monks rebuilding after WWII. There was this faint smell of pine needles when we stepped out; maybe it was just my imagination or maybe it really clings to those hills. As we curved toward the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius came into view—massive, just sitting there like it owned the place. Marco told us three million people live right under its shadow. That stuck with me all day.

I’d read about Pompeii before but nothing prepares you for walking those old stone streets. The drive along the Amalfi Coast was slower than I thought—traffic gets wild—but nobody cared much because every bend showed off another impossible view of blue sea and lemon groves. When we finally reached Positano, pastel houses tumbled down cliffs like they’d been poured from above. We wandered narrow alleys lined with linen shops; I bought a tiny bottle of limoncello from an old man who winked at me like he knew some secret about life on these hillsides. My shoes filled with sand on the beach promenade, but I didn’t mind—it felt right somehow.

The ride back to Rome was quiet except for Marco humming softly along with the radio.
