The experience
The minivan picks you up at Civitavecchia Port and drives you into Rome, where your driver handles the route while you decide how long to spend at each site. You'll see St. Peter's Basilica and its square, rebuilt by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667; the Pantheon, constructed under Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 128 AD; Piazza Navona, built on the old stadium of Diocletian and now home to the Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Church of St. Agnes in Agony; and Trevi Fountain, the Baroque work of Nicola Salvi from the eighteenth century. The driver will also show you the Spanish Steps with the Fountain Barcaccia by Pietro Bernini, Piazza Venezia with the Vittoriano (Altar of the Fatherland), and Victor Emmanuel II Monument.
The tour runs nine hours total, though transfer times depend on traffic and the time of day. Bottled water is provided, and the air-conditioned minivan seats up to eight passengers. Because you're traveling by private vehicle with a driver who knows the city, you avoid the confusion of public transit and the walking required to move between distant landmarks on foot. The driver offers information and suggestions, but the pace at each stop is yours to set.
Cruise ship passengers must provide their ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time at booking so the driver can time the return to the port. A dress code applies to enter places of worship and selected museums: knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women, and no shorts or sleeveless tops are allowed.
