The experience
The golf cart does the work that would otherwise fall to your feet. Instead of walking Rome's main streets (where traffic, noise and crowds pile up). You ride through the quaint back streets that connect the city's classical monuments. The driver stops at each location long enough for you to step out, walk into the buildings or plazas, and take in what's there. Villa Borghese, one of Europe's largest urban parks, is where the tour begins. From there you move through Piazza del Popolo, past the Column of Marcus Aurelius in Piazza Colonna, and down to the Circus Maximus, which once held 300,000 spectators between the Aventine and Palatine Hills.
The route avoids the congestion that makes walking exhausting. You'll see the Theater of Marcellus, completed in the late 1st century BCE and the model for the Colosseum's design; the Mouth of Truth in Piazza della Bocca della Verità, the ancient carving said to bite the hands of liars; and Trevi Fountain, the late Baroque masterpiece finished in 1762. Trajan's Markets, the 2nd-century complex built by the emperor, appears on the itinerary alongside the Temple of Hercules and Temple of Portunus, both ancient structures near the Tiber. The tour also passes Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, with its oculus (the greatest dome ever built in masonry) before ending at Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps.
An English-speaking driver guides the whole three hours, so you're not managing a map or deciding which turn to take next. Children from age four ride along. Public transportation is nearby if you need it before or after, and the pace suits all fitness levels because the cart carries you between stops.
