Maritozzo and coffee, market tastings, a sandwich, wine, and gelato: the neighborhood's food story in three hours

A food tour of Testaccio in Rome where you walk through one of the city's most authentic neighborhoods with a local guide, tasting Roman specialties at the Point of Sale market and learning how the area's cuisine connects to its working-class history. You start with a maritozzo and coffee in a historic bar, move through the market for gourmet pizza and fried meats, taste local wine, and finish with artisan gelato in Piazza Testaccio.

The experience

What makes Testaccio different from the rest of Rome? The neighborhood itself: its Point of Sale market, the Monte dei Cocci ancient mound, the former slaughterhouse, and the food that grew out of working-class Roman life. A local guide walks you through all of it, starting at Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice with a classic maritozzo and Italian coffee in a historic bar. From there you move between the piazza and Monte dei Cocci, seeing how the neighborhood's past and present sit side by side.

The real work happens at the Testaccio Point of Sale, where you taste your way through what Romans actually eat: gourmet pizza, supplì, zucchini flowers, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes. You'll have a sandwich built from seasonal ingredients and traditional Roman recipes (meat or vegetarian), and a tasting of local Italian wine in a small shop inside the market itself. The guide connects each taste to the neighborhood's history, so the food is never just food.

The tour ends with a visit to the former slaughterhouse, then artisan gelato in Piazza Testaccio. The whole thing runs three hours, which is long enough to eat and walk without rushing, short enough to fit the rest of your day in the city.

What’s included

  • A generous selection of authentic Roman food tastings throughout the tour, including market specialties and street food.
  • a tasting of local Italian wine inside Testaccio Market.
  • a local Roman guide throughout the three-hour experience.
  • traditional Italian coffee served with the opening maritozzo at a historic Testaccio café.
