The experience

You start in Rome's historic center with your guide, walking through Piazza Navona to hear the story of Bernini's fountain, then moving through streets made famous by films like Roman Holiday to reach the Trevi Fountain. The Pantheon comes next: a nearly 2,000-year-old building with the largest un-reinforced concrete dome in the world, and your guide explains how it inspired everything from St. Peter's Basilica to the U.S. Capitol. You'll see Piazza Venezia and get an overlook of the Roman Forum instead of walking through the crowds inside it, learning how the Forum functioned as the beating heart of Rome's empire.

After a one-hour lunch break (your guide will recommend places), you head to the Colosseum with skip-the-line access. A guided tour inside takes about an hour, and you'll hear stories of gladiators and emperors while learning what daily life looked like in Rome 1,000 years ago. Then a quick bus transfer takes you to the Vatican Museums, where you skip the line again and walk through the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of the Maps, and galleries of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. The Sistine Chapel is the final stop: Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling fills the space, and your guide is there to frame what you're looking at.

The tour runs about 7.5 hours and keeps to small groups of 18 guests maximum. You'll need a moderate level of fitness for the walking, and government ID is required at the Colosseum entrance: names must match your booking exactly.
