The Experience

We met our guide just outside the Colosseum — she waved a little flag and grinned at my son like they already had a secret. It was busy (of course), but somehow her energy cut right through the crowd. As soon as we got our entrance tickets sorted, she split us into teams. My daughter immediately tried to name our group “The Lions.” I think she was picturing herself in one of those ancient battles, which made me laugh and also… worry a little?

Inside, the air felt cool and kind of dusty, even with all the voices echoing around. Our guide started tossing out questions about gladiators — not easy ones either. At one point she asked what animals used to fight here, and my son whispered “unicorns” just loud enough for everyone to hear. The other family’s dad snorted so hard he almost dropped his phone. There were points for right answers (and some for funny ones), and every time someone got it right, our guide would clap or make this dramatic “Bravo!” that made people nearby glance over.

I didn’t expect to get swept up in it myself, but when we stood down on the old arena floor, looking up at all that stone and sky, I felt weirdly small — in a good way. You could almost smell the history (or maybe that was just old stone and sunscreen). The kids kept racing ahead to find clues while we grownups hung back swapping guesses about Roman snacks. There was a final round before we left — my daughter’s team won by one point (she hasn’t let us forget it). I still think about her face when she realized she’d actually won something inside the Colosseum.
