The experience

The transfer runs 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and whether you stop. Your driver picks you up at your hotel, apartment or airport in Amalfi at a time you set, then takes the coastal road toward Sorrento. If you want to break the journey, you can spend 2 hours at Pompeii or the Stabia Archeological Site instead of driving straight through. The driver waits and brings you back to the vehicle when you're ready. The vehicle is air-conditioned and stocked with bottled water. Your driver is a qualified local who speaks English and knows the area, not a tour guide, but someone who can point out local details and help you spot things worth seeing along the way.

The fleet ranges from a sedan for one to three passengers up to two large vans for groups of 11 to 14, each with luggage space built in. A family of four fits in an MPV with room for four suitcases. A larger party can book a van or a combination of vehicles. If you want to stop for lunch instead of (or in addition to) Pompeii, the driver can arrange that. Entrance fees to any archaeological site are not included and are paid on the spot if you choose to enter.
