The Experience

The first thing I remember is our driver waving at a neighbor in Positano as we squeezed into the van — everyone here seems to know each other. The road out of town twisted so much I lost count (don’t eat too much breakfast, just saying). When we reached Pompeii, our guide Francesca handed us little earpieces and grinned, “You’ll want these — I talk a lot.” She was right. Walking through those old stone streets with her, it felt less like a museum and more like wandering someone’s memory. She pointed out the bakery’s oven still blackened inside, and when she described the Forum bustling with voices two thousand years ago, I swear you could almost hear it under the crunch of gravel.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on an archaeological tour — Francesca kept tossing in stories about Roman gossip (apparently some things never change). The air smelled faintly dusty and sweet, maybe from all those wildflowers poking through cracks. After two hours that flew by, we piled back into the van for Mt. Vesuvius. The drive up got quiet; even our group stopped chatting as the Gulf of Naples opened below us — blue haze and sunlight everywhere.

At 1000 meters up, we started hiking “The Gran Cone” path toward the crater. My legs complained but honestly, it was worth every step. The wind up there is sharp and smells almost metallic — not sure if that’s sulfur or just my imagination running wild. Standing at the edge looking down into that silent crater… well, I still think about that view when things get noisy back home. We lingered longer than planned before heading back down — nobody really wanted to leave yet.
