Pompeii & Lacryma Christi wine tasting: Private tour with lunch
Wine and lunch happen on the slopes where the volcano buried the city 2,000 years ago.
A private tour combining Pompeii's archaeological site with wine tasting and a three-course lunch at Cantina del Vesuvio, a family-owned winery on Mount Vesuvius. You explore Pompeii independently, then travel to the winery for a guided vineyard walk, tour of the production facility, and five wines paired with local specialties on a terrace overlooking the Gulf of Naples and Capri. An English-speaking driver provides hotel pickup and drop-off. You can add Mount Vesuvius crater or Herculaneum ruins in the afternoon.

- Tour winery and taste Lacryma Christi wines
- Enjoy typical local lunch at winery
- Optional visit to Mount Vesuvius or Herculaneum Ruins
The experience
You arrive at Pompeii and walk the archaeological site on your own, moving through the streets and structures buried under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash in AD 79. The site sits on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, so the volcano itself frames the ruins as you move through them. After exploring independently, the driver takes you to Cantina del Vesuvio, a winery owned by three generations of the Russo family and located on the mountain's lower slopes overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
At the winery, a member of the Russo family leads a guided walk through the vineyards, then tours the production facility where Lacryma Christi DOC is made. You sit on the terrace facing the gulf, Sorrento peninsula and Capri Island while tasting five wines paired with a three-course lunch of local specialties from the Mount Vesuvius area. The tasting also includes wine vinegar and olive oil from the same slopes. Celiacs, vegetarians and vegans can request special menus.
In the afternoon, you choose to add either Mount Vesuvius National Park (where you can visit the volcanic crater at 1,281 meters and see the view across the gulf), or Herculaneum Ruins, the Roman town destroyed by pyroclastic flows in the same AD 79 eruption. If you skip both, the driver returns you to your hotel. The whole day runs 7 to 9 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions
What is Lacryma Christi wine and why does it come from Mount Vesuvius?
Lacryma Christi DOC is an organic wine produced at Cantina del Vesuvio on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, where volcanic soil gives the grapes their character. The winery's limited production is sold only at the facility itself, so the tasting is exclusive to visitors who book this tour.
Can I walk around Pompeii on my own, or does a guide lead the tour?
You explore Pompeii independently at your own pace. No guide accompanies you through the archaeological site. The winery portion includes a guided walk through the vineyards and a tour of the production facility led by a member of the Russo family.
What happens if I want to visit Mount Vesuvius crater instead of Herculaneum?
You choose either Mount Vesuvius or Herculaneum when you book. Mount Vesuvius takes you to the crater at 1,281 meters with views across the Gulf of Naples. Herculaneum is the Roman town buried by pyroclastic flows in AD 79. You pick one as an add-on to the basic tour, or skip both and return to your hotel after lunch.
Is the Pompeii entrance ticket included in the price?
Pompeii's entrance ticket is not included. You purchase it separately when you arrive at the archaeological site. The winery visit, wine tasting, lunch and all transportation are included in your booking.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
Celiacs, vegetarians and vegans can request special menus at the winery. Let the operator know your needs when you book so the kitchen can prepare your three-course lunch accordingly.
