Explore Orvieto Cathedral and Underground

  • Visit Orvieto Cathedral and San Brizio chapel
  • Tour underground tunnels of Pozzo della Cava

The experience

Two hours takes you through two layers of Orvieto. You start at the Cathedral, where the focus is the San Brizio chapel and Signorelli's frescoes: works the source notes inspired Michelangelo five centuries later. The scale and detail of the paintings are what people come to see, and the guide walks you through them rather than leaving you to puzzle it out alone.

Then you descend into Pozzo della Cava, the underground area beneath the city. These tunnels were carved by hand over more than 23 centuries, and your guide explains how each room was used across that span of history. The centerpiece is the Etruscan well itself, 36 meters deep, which you look down into from the tunnel floor. The scale of the excavation and the depth of the well are what make this stop distinct from a surface walk.

The final stretch takes you to the edge of the cliffs along Orvieto's medieval walls, where you stop at viewpoints to see the countryside: rolling hills with vineyards and olive trees, and the brown-stone town itself below. A short walk through the narrow alleys brings you back to Piazza Duomo, where the tour ends.
