The experience
You're picked up at the Cagliari cruise port and driven 30 minutes south to Nora, where the guide meets you at the gate. The site sits on a peninsula where the southern coast of Sardinia is sinking into the Mediterranean, which means parts of the ancient town are already underwater and more will follow. Your guide spends 1.5 hours walking you through what remains: the thermal baths at the entrance, the cobbled street leading to Piazza del Foro (the town's heart), and the Temple of Tanit, a Carthaginian shrine. The excavations started in 1889 after a storm uncovered a Phoenician cemetery and have continued since, though much of Nora stays buried.
The theater is the centerpiece: the only one in Sardinia, built to seat 1,000 people across 20 terraces and once lined with marble. It still hosts the La Notte dei Poeti festival each summer. Beyond it you'll see an aqueduct, a necropolis, and the rooms of a third-century nobleman's house decorated with mosaics. The guide will point out how much of the city remains unexcavated, and from the beach you can look out across the golden sand and Mediterranean water to imagine what this trading center was when it was alive.
After Nora, you have about 90 minutes in Pula, a small town nearby with narrow streets, old patrician homes, and craft shops where you can pick up souvenirs or grab a meal if time allows. The minivan then takes you back to the Cagliari pier to meet your ship's schedule. The whole excursion runs 5 to 6 hours, and your guide will adjust the pace if the ship runs late so you make it back on time.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, French, Italian and Portuguese.
What exactly is the Phoenician Tophet that was uncovered at Nora?
The Phoenician Tophet is a cemetery for children that was discovered in 1889 when a storm exposed it. That discovery triggered the archaeological excavations that have continued at the site ever since.
Can I walk around the theater at Nora, or is it blocked off?
The theater is open to walk around. During the La Notte dei Poeti festival in summer, it's covered to protect the ruins, but the structure itself remains one of the main attractions at the site and you'll see it as part of the guided tour.
How much time do I actually spend at the Nora ruins versus traveling and in Pula?
Your guide leads a 1.5-hour tour of the archaeological zone itself. You then have approximately 90 minutes in Pula town before the return drive to the cruise port. The 30-minute drive each way and the return journey to the ship make up the rest of the 5 to 6 hours total.
What happens if my cruise ship is delayed and I'm running late getting back?
If the tour starts late or encounters delays, the guide will shorten the itinerary to make sure you return to the cruise port by your scheduled re-boarding time. There are no third-party operations that could prevent you from getting back to the ship on schedule.
Is the archaeological site accessible if I use a wheelchair or have mobility concerns?
All areas and surfaces at Nora are wheelchair accessible. The site is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and specialized infant seats and strollers are available if you're traveling with small children.
