The Experience

I’d always heard about Murano glass but never really pictured what it meant until I was standing in that old brick factory, the air thick and warm from the furnace. Our guide—Francesca, who grew up on the island—waved us over just as Maestro Fabio Fornasier started shaping molten glass. The way he spun it, almost like pulling taffy, made me forget to take photos for a minute. There was this faint smell of ash and something sweet, maybe from the wood they use? It’s hard to describe but it stuck to my clothes for hours after.

We got to sit so close that I could actually hear the crackle when his team rolled the glass across the table. Francesca told us stories about how these techniques go back centuries—she even pointed out her uncle’s name scratched into one of the old benches (she laughed and said he was “famous for skipping chores”). The private Murano glass tour included a welcome drink, which I sipped while trying not to stare too obviously at Fabio’s hands—they moved so fast you’d think he was playing piano.
