The experience
The boat leaves Monterosso and moves slowly through the Cinque Terre National Park, passing Vernazzo with its waterfront church and protective tower, then Corniglia perched 100 meters up on a cliff, followed by Manarola known for its dessert wine production. You'll see Riomaggiore's brightly colored houses and the start of the famous Via del Amore footpath before the boat exits the park and heads down the coast toward Portovenere. The slow pace is built into the route: a speed limit within the park means you have time to photograph each village and take in the terraced hillsides.
Between Riomaggiore and Portovenere, there's a stop to swim in one of the secluded crystalline coves accessible only by boat. Snorkelling equipment is on board if you want it. Portovenere itself sits at the end of the route with tall narrow colored houses lining the harbor and St. Peter's Church on the cliff side. Here the boat waits for sunset while you're served an aperitivo of local pesto and fresh focaccia, along with local white wine, beer, bottled water and soft drinks. After sunset, the boat sails through the Gulf of the Poets to La Spezia, where the tour ends shortly after dark.
