The experience
How do you reach the best Brunello and Nobile cellars without a rental car? Your driver picks you up at your hotel, B&B or apartment and handles the full day's route through the Val d'Orcia. The morning stops in Montepulciano at a historic winery where you walk past the giant oak barrels that age Vino Nobile and taste four wines: Rosso di Montepulciano, Nobile di Montepulciano, Nobile Riserva and a Super Tuscan. Lunch follows at the same location: pasta with Pici in meat sauce, Pecorino cheese from Pienza and Tuscan cold cuts.
The afternoon drive to Pienza crosses some of Tuscany's most photographed landscape: rows of cypresses, rolling wheat fields and vineyards that have stood in for the Italian countryside in films like Gladiator and Under the Tuscan Sun. You stop in Pienza itself to learn about Pecorino cheese, especially the version aged under ashes. Then the route continues to Montalcino, where a prestigious family winery opens its cellars and vineyards for a second tasting session. After a short lesson on local production, you taste five Brunello wines: Rosso di Montalcino, two Brunello Riserva, a Super Tuscan and a Rosé. Your driver returns you to your accommodation at the end of the day.
